Needs & Certainty

This piece is a Sestina. It is about the often overwhelming feelings
that come from day-to-day work at a “9 to 5” job.
It’s precursor, the previous piece, is an adaptation which also questions
yellow, hope and the ambiguous nature of certainty.

Needs & Certainty

ago, the world was flat for certain.

Maslow’s needs built pyramid’s against this

replaced by things, buy things: the West’s quest for that

which will one day fade into ancient desert sand

in the tomb lies Pandora’s box re-branded hope

where wants are needs in prefab, neon yellow

driving, gridlock, caution amber yellow

of life’s winding turns, how can i be certain?

the mind’s change of direction then is hope?

a lullaby of strength and whispered courage during this

or stay, an ostrich in the sand

i blame more and more and more for that

working way, way to the top that clutch, claw that

blinds the pleasure of new morn sunned yellow

that glows and basks and bakes my hands on sand

between my toes as ocean licks… are feelings certain?

o’ what could release hopes’ evil better than this?

monitor screensaver cubicle… i’ll escape one day, (false hope)

beware: when you dream, wish, urge and hope

as the destitude and famished yearn for that

of which they know not of the slavery of this

a thirst for things thus i question simple yellow

and enough is never enough but i can’t be certain

slogging slush hush sleet feet salt melted, then comes sand

beach desert collide and dew dropped oasis, buried in sand

a mountain to an ant or a sandbox to a child play hope

for a world that at least knows round for certain!

no! not just the abstinence of war, a whole peace that

will one day help cease (and end my conflict of yellow)

the dawn of day, lost sunsets of this

could just a tranquil, primary colour express this?

a simple truth drawn down – slow sucking quick sand

slipping, spreading (and on the other hand) yellow

a hue of sunlight, a paintbrush dipped, mustard custard enjoy your hope

like marketing lies, smear campaigns, ad jingles and media thrills that

make the world spin too quickly (i may be certain)

this yellow means something, stop see look stop hope

yellow, yellow might be real in the realms of this and that

of this, and of yellow, I am certain.
